When You Don't Use Feminized Hemp Seeds Or High CBD Female Clones.....
We went with our own high CBD strain genetics from last years breeding project. This meant a LOT of work.
Its been a long season, and its only July 11th! In our first year going big we opted not to buy feminized seeds or all female hemp clones. We developed a killer high CBD strain last year and had many ponds of the seed, so we decided to start 300,000 seeds and sex them out. Yes, 300,000 seeds!!!
Our SEEDED genetics tested out at 12-13% cannabinoids (CBD, CBC, CBN) last year. The cannabinoid profile is amazing, and giving that it was seeded flower that was tested we had to go for a full run of all females this year. It was a no brainer... right? All flower, no seeds should be off the charts in terms of CBD, CBN and CBC. Of course a ton of work comes with this decision. The sexing process is very arduous, and we're going to have to rogue the field for males up until August. As I sit here and write this post, I just got back from the field, still pulling some straggling male plants. No, this year is not efficient, but we believe the payoff for years to come will be huge.
We are creating feminized seeds this season. That is going to be an interesting process. We also have 5 acres of straight seed production (males and females), where we seeded our prized genetics right in the ground. So we will have plenty of regular seeds of this varietal available to farmers next year. It truly is a gem of a strain. For these plots we have amazing farmer partners that are using their equipment and resources to bring the crop home for us. We have 2 seeded plots. One is 25 acres of a lower CBD strain, this is our bonus oil plot. We processed down some hemp from another farmer here in Maine and in doing so he allowed us to keep all of the seeds. Good deal! Enough for 25 acres. We Mainers are nothing if not resourceful.
The second seeded plot is 5 acres. Again, we have a farmer partner for this. This plot will be our heady genetics. We are stoked at the amount of seeds we'll have for sale from this plot. Hemp farming is spreading across this country. Farmers will need seed.
Our 3rd location is the 60 acre all female location. Again, we are partnered with a farmer in Northern Maine, a potato farmer actually. We have access to all of the heavy machinery and knowledge of these wonderful farmers. But, most of the work is up to us. And its been a ton of work. Do not get into CBD farming if you think its any different than any other agricultural crop.
